Below you will find photographs of cemetery stones and bases taken in the Mt. Whitney Cemetery that appear to be constructed from locally quarried dolomite. (I’m going to ask a local person to confirm that these stones were made from the local dolomite.) These photographs are also shown in the “Some Cemetery Stones & Markers in the Mt. Whitney Cemetery” section where you will find other stones located in the cemetery. I wanted to show the following dolomite cemetery stones separately so you could see the wide variety of color that’s found in the dolomite.
If you’d like to view the photographs of the rest of the Mt. Whitney Cemetery, go to the “Overview Photographs of the Mt. Whitney Cemetery” section of our web site. (These photographs were taken by Peggy B. Perazzo in late September 2010.) (* In the old geology books, the stone quarried near Lone Pine was referred to as “marble,” but today the stone is only referred to as “dolomite” in the Lone Pine area.)
