Funeral of Lebbeus A. Lee Held Yesterday
Deceased was formerly Superior Judge of Essex County, N. Y.
The funeral service of the late Lebbeus A. Lee took place yesterday afternoon from the Chapel of W. L. Woodrow. Fitting remarks were rendered by the Rev. Harper of the First Baptist Church. The deceased was of old Puritan stock, being a descendant of John Lee, one of the original founders of Hartford, Conn., in 1634. Mr. Lee’s father settled at Lewis, Essex County, N. Y., in 1801, and there at the old homestead, in the Adirondacks and on the shores of Lake Champlain. Mr. Lee was born in 1829.
In his earlier days, Mr. Lee was a school teacher and in the “sixties” he was a Superior Judge of Essex County. But failing health compelled him to seek a more congenial climate and in 1871 he migrated to California and at once settled in San Jose, sending for his family. His home has been in Santa Clara County ever since. He lived for 20 years in the home he built on South Ninth street and for almost another 20 years at his later home near the Alameda road in Willow Glen.
Mr. Lee came of a race of octogenarians, his father and mother reaching almost the century mark.
A few weeks since, while plowing a creek bank, he met with an accident, which caused serious complications for a time. For the last two weeks, however, he seemed to have regained his normal vigor; but on Friday last, he was taken with violent vomiting spells which finally ended in internal hemorrage (sic).
The deceased is survived by his widow, Hattie A. Lee, his four children, Mrs. Cora Bowden of Dinuba, Mrs. Carrie Cross of Tulare, Mrs. Chas. Fisher of Willow Glen, and Robert A. Lee of San Jose, also by his grandchildren, James Bith and Raymond Bowden, Leana Fisher and Veva Blood.
The pallbearers were old-time friends: A. Sargeant, F. G. Wool, W. E. Keith, E. G. Northrup, E. L. Pettit, and Hugh Leigh.
This coming August the deceased would have celebrated his golden wedding.
